With the return of warm weather we look forward to welcoming you to the UN beach for the remainder of the season, which depending on the weather, may continue until mid-October, as it has in previous years.

We take this opportunity to remind you that members have exclusive and unlimited use of the paddleboards and pedalos and this is now strictly enforced. End-of-season memberships are available for CHF 25 at In comparison, paddleboard rental at the neighbouring Reposoir is CHF 18 an hour.

The restaurant also remains open for lunch and dinner, with the all-you-can eat and drink Sunday barbecue brunch.

Follow-up actions on our campaign for “ One UN, One Pay” | Actions de suivi de notre campagne contre les coupes salariales « A même Organisation, même rémunération »

Thank you for coming to our townhall on Monday.

We agreed that our campaign isn’t about the 2018 pay cut. Now that the ILOAT has restored a higher pay ($400 to $1,000 more a month depending on the grade) to the specialized agencies in its jurisdiction and with staff receiving backpay of between $4,000 and $10,000, the aim is to secure pay equality across the UN system and prevent its further disintegration as organizations start setting their own conditions of service.

We noted that the Secretary-General and the ICSC have refused to take any action to restore pay equality at the UN pending the exhaustion of a UNDT legal process (likely to drag on for another year). This despite the clear ruling and reasoning of the ILOAT. Faced with this situation, you were clear that we need to take action.

We decided to work together on a common action plan for the immediate future, focusing on:

  • A global campaign and communications around “One UN, One Pay”.
  • Staff mobilization.
  • Creative forms of high-impact, short-notice rolling industrial action in line with existing mandates and rules.

Importantly we are not alone. Staff unions from agencies across Geneva, under UNDT and ILOAT jurisdiction, attended yesterday and committed themselves to our campaign.

UN Theatre Club improvisation workshop, September-December 2019 | Atelier d'improvisation du Club de Théâtre de l'ONU de septembre à décembre 2019

The improvisation workshop of United Nations Theatre Club in Geneva restarts on Thursday 12 September until Thursday 12 December 2019.

Classes are held every Thursday from 6.30 p.m. to 8.00 p.m., in French, with warmups, improvisation exercises and other rewarding preparatory activities with a professional improvisation teacher: Mr. Laszlo Maio from Stand Impro:

The Club is open to anyone whether an international civil servant or not.

The first session on 12 September is offered by Stand Impro for participants who want to try this activity. Next sessions onwards must be paid to the club by bank transfer. Total fees are CHF 300 for the 3 months.

How your pay, parental leave and other employment conditions are affected by the recent ICSC meeting | L'impact de la dernière session de la CFPI sur votre rémunération, vos congés parentaux et vos conditions de service

The International Civil Service Commission (ICSC), which makes recommendations on our pay and conditions of service, met in Vienna from 29 July to 9 August. The ICSC is composed of 15 commissioners elected by the General Assembly. Your staff federation, the Coordinating Committee of International Staff Unions and Associations (, of which your staff union is a member, was there to represent your interests. 

Please find below a summary of the meeting and what were able to obtain for you. There were many positive developments. However, some important areas of concern remain. This includes the issue of the pay cut, on which we touch briefly here but for which we will separately invite you to a dedicated townhall next week.

Townhall this Monday on the serious consequences of the continuing pay cut | Réunion générale lundi sur les graves conséquences des coupes salariales

You will recall that in July the ILOAT declared the pay cut illegal, leading five specialized agencies, namely WIPO, ITU, WHO, ILO and IOM, to restore the correct pay for their staff and refund the difference from the previous year. We asked the Secretary-General to restore our pay as well but he refused.

Faced with this unjust and unequal situation, 6,200 of you signed our petition calling on the Secretary-General and the ICSC to restore pay for all staff in Geneva. As you will have seen from our separate broadcast on the summer session (pertinent text below), the ICSC refused to do so pending the outcome of our legal case, which is still under consideration at the UNDT in Nairobi.

This outcome is of course disappointing and worrying, and on several fronts:

  • Staff at the UN in Geneva are paid less than staff at specialized agencies in Geneva for delivering the same work and indeed have lower purchasing power than counterparts in other duty stations.
  • We now have a precedent where different conditions of service could multiply across the UN system.
  • Combined with the Secretary-General’s reluctance to counter the ICSC’s inaction, this means UN staff across the world could end up worse off not just on pay, but on overall welfare, including safety coverage for staff and their families.
  • Over time, this puts the integrity and future of the UN system under threat.

Faced with these potential consequences, we would like to invite you to a townhall this Monday 9 September at 1.15 pm in Room 7 to discuss next steps in our campaign and actions to be taken.
