Upcoming session of the Staff Management Committee June 2018 | Session du Comité Administration-Personnel - juin 2018

The Staff-Management Committee (SMC) will hold its seventh session from 18 to 25 June in New York.
The SMC is the global body for staff-management consultations in the United Nations.
This SMC session is of particular importance given the Secretary-General's reform initiatives, including the Global Service Delivery Model (GSDM).

Please note that we have submitted papers on the use of temporary contracts and some proposed changes to the staff rules by the Ethics office.
Other important issues that will be discussed during the session and that affect staff in Geneva are a new mobility policy, protecting staff affected by GSDM, pension fund delays and better parental leave.
In advance of the meeting, we would appreciate any comments that you may have which will help us formulate our positions jointly with other unions.


Charity Golf Competition at Jivahill Resort: 3rd Facchinetti Challenge 2018 - 2 June 2018 | 3ème Défi Facchinetti : Compétition de bienfaisance au Jivahill Resort - 2 juin 2018

On Saturday 2 June 2018, in collaboration with IGC (International Golf Club - Geneva) the 3rd Facchinetti Golf Challenge will be held at the Jivahill Golf Course in nearby France (23 minutes by car from Palais des Nations). The format will be Stableford in two shotgun rounds of 18 holes; tee-off times, 9am and 2pm. Prizing giving, cocktail and lottery will start at 18h00 to 20h30.
A limited number of places for invitees are available and will assigned on a "first come first served basis". This invitation is open to staff members of UN, of International Organizations and of the diplomatic missions in Geneva, who play golf and have a registered handicap. Funds collected will be donated to the "College of Magic" organization for children in Cape Town, South Africa.

Tax Compliance - Automatic Exchange of Information | Conformité fiscale - Echange Automatique de Renseignements


You will recall our well-attended townhall on Swiss taxes last September. Since then a number of developments have taken place that will impact you. 

As of autumn 2018, tax authorities in many countries will conduct the automatic exchange of information (AEOI). More than 100 jurisdictions have committed to implementing AEOI. 

In this context, the Swiss and Geneva tax authorities have announced that the possibility to benefit from a tax amnesty will significantly reduce. As of September 2018 the voluntary declaration of formerly undeclared income or assets will no longer be considered as non-punishable; sanctions will apply. In a similar vein, the French tax authorities recently closed their tax regularization unit. 

In order to avoid any penalty, you may wish to check your tax compliance, whether Swiss or not, with the tax administration concerned, and particularly if you have applied for Swiss nationality. Depending on status, wealth considered for tax purposes may include bank accounts held in Switzerland, abroad, at the AMFI (La Mutuelle), as well as other assets such as real estate in Switzerland and abroad. While Switzerland and France have a number of treaties to avoid double taxation of wealth with regards to income and assets in third countries, these may still need to be declared, even if not taxable.  

It is also worth knowing that in depositing funds at AMFI and many financial other institutions, you will be required to provide proof of prior tax compliance.

UN beach opening party this Saturday | Ouverture de la plage de l'ONU samedi

With spring sort of here, we would like to invite you to the annual opening party of UN beach this Saturday 5 May between 11.30 a.m. and 2.30 p.m.
New features this year at the UN beach include: 

·     a new children's play area with paddling pool;
·     party theme nights;
·     paddle board yoga, sailing and other courses;
·     additional sun loungers so you can while away the weekends;
·     new paddle boards (free for subscription holders);
·     a replanted lawn; and
·     a revised restaurant menu in line with your feedback.

The UN Jazz Band will be entertaining. A welcome buffet and drinks, including prosecco, rosé and blue wine, will be provided. Entry is also free, and consultants, interns and family members are also welcome. Please print this invitation to enter.
Please note that parking spaces are limited, but you are welcome to come by bike or to make a walk of it via the parks along the lake or through the tunnel from the botanical gardens.

Take part in the Geneva May day march | Participez à la marche de Genève à l’occasion du 1er mai

This year's Geneva May day march will have a strong international flavour:

• The staff unions of international organizations in Geneva will be participating in order to call for a reform of how our conditions of service are determined. This is in light of recent changes to methodologies and their incorrect application, affecting G and P staff, as well as growing trends in the use of precarious contracts (temporary and consultant). The focus, in line with our campaign, will be reforming the International Civil Service Commission to bring it in line with the UN's values of fairness, transparency and respect for worker rights, while ensuring a strong say for staff through a tripartite structure. 

• Interns organizations will be participating to draw attention to the matter of unpaid internships in the UN system and the discriminatory effect they have on people who cannot take internships because they cannot afford to work for free. It will also raise awareness on a number of decent work deficits that interns face, including sexual harassment and the lack of formalized rights like sick leave.

The event will start at the broken chair with a collective gathering of all supporters to the cause for a group photo at 12.30 p.m. All people joining the march will then move to Gare Cornavin to where the Geneva-wide event to mark International Labour Day will start at 1.30 p.m. The march will cross the Mont Blanc Bridge and end at Parc des Bastions at approximately 4.30 p.m., where refreshments will be provided to all participants.

The joint participation of staff, consultants and interns underlines the ongoing solidarity across the UN workforce. 

Subject to exigencies of service, we therefore ask supervisors to allow both staff members and interns to participate in the event on 1 May. We also recall that, regarding standards of conduct, interns are held to the same high standards of conduct that are applicable to United Nations staff members. They should therefore refrain from conduct that is violent or political in nature.
