Update on removing limits to GS career development | Informations mises à jour sur l’élimination des barrières qui entravent les perspectives de carrière des agents des services généraux

As a follow-up to our broadcast of 15 November, please note that the ACABQ, the committee that advises the General Assembly on administrative matters, has examined the proposal, developed jointly with management, to remove limits to General Service colleagues applying for P positions and issued report A/73/497. Their report notes the following:

30. “The Advisory Committee notes the qualifications possessed by staff serving in the General Service and related categories and the need to improve their opportunities for career development. The Committee also emphasizes that, in developing human resources policies, all factors should be taken into account to ensure equal treatment of all candidates.”

31. “With respect to the proposals of the Secretary-General contained in paragraphs 150 (a) and (b) of his report (A/73/372/Add.1), the Advisory Committee is of the view that the Secretary-General should develop a proposal for a pilot project, with a clearly defined scope and time frame, for the consideration of the General Assembly, in order to achieve equal opportunities for recruitment to entry-level Professional posts, including career opportunities for staff members in the General Service and related categories. Pending approval of such a pilot project, the Committee recommends that all of the existing arrangements relating to the young professionals programme, including the G to P element, approved by the Assembly be maintained at this stage.” [emphasis added]

The matter is now before the Fifth Committee of the General Assembly, who will deliberate over this recommendation among other issues, including to increase certain allowances and fix the governance of the Pension Fund, within the upcoming weeks. As was noted earlier more work is still ahead of us in convincing the Member States that there is a need to allow every staff member to fulfill their individual potential and personal contribution to the overall success of the Organization.

We will keep you posted as we move along together in this journey!

Staff party on 7 December 2018 | Fête du personnel le vendredi 7 décembre 2018

Staff party | 1st floor E-Building | Friday 7 December | 7 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Friday 7 December is the staff party, time once again to let your hair down - see the photos from previous parties and video.

Headlining the party this year is the Tony Momrelle band (R&B, jazz, soul) who we guarantee will get you on your toes. Also on stage, DJ Alex, who will play plenty of upbeat music to keep you dancing into the early hours.

And to help you with your salsa moves, the Dance Club will provide a dance demonstration.

Back by popular acclaim, after last year's success, is the karaoke lounge (you may spot some of your colleagues here or here) with an expanded selection of French, English and Spanish hits from the 60s to today; impress your colleagues with talents you didn’t know you had.

There will be plenty of bars to keep you hydrated. And to make sure you don't go hungry, Eldora will sell hot and cold dishes throughout the evening, for yourself or to share with friends, with free onion soup at midnight. Make an effort, dress to impress.

Anyone with a UN or specialized agency badge (staff, consultant, intern, courtesy) is welcome, along with one guest. However, UNOG Security will not allow staff or guests to enter the Palais after 11 p.m.

Hope to see many of you.

Campaign to remove barriers to GS career development | Campagne pour l’élimination des barrières pour le passage de la catégorie G à P

As you may be aware, we have been working with other staff unions to remove the current barriers that prevent GS colleagues from applying to P positions.

A proposal, developed jointly with management, is currently before the General Assembly for its consideration. This proposal would allow GS staff to be able to apply for P-1, P-2 and P-3 positions based on their experience and qualifications.

As part of this campaign, we would like to share with you a video (password: UN) produced in New York that has been made available to GA delegates.

We hope that the General Assembly will take action to remove the glass ceiling that holds back the talent and potential of GS colleagues.

Survey on misconduct at the workspace | Sondage sur la conduite prohibée sur le lieu de travail

Staff Unions and Associations of the UN Common System are deeply concerned about the welfare and well-being of you, the staff. An important aspect of our experiences in the workplace is the feeling of being in a safe and welcoming environment where we are treated with respect and dignity. One of the main scourges of our organizations is harassment, in all of its forms. A number of important bodies are looking closing at these issues and how we can better protect staff.

CCISUA, our Federation, would like to hear your experiences with harassment, sexual harassment, discrimination and abuse of authority. We would appreciate it if you would take a few minutes to fill a survey on these very important topics by Friday 9 November. We hope to hear from as broad a range of staff as possible from victims to those who have never experienced these issues. The results of the survey are anonymous and will be used to help develop new policies.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
